چکیده
Abstract A 2,200‐year CESM1 pre‐industrial simulation is used to contrast Antarctic sea ice concentration (SIC) variations between the first and second austral winters of multi‐year La Niñas. The typical SIC anomaly pattern induced by single‐year Niñas appears only during winter similar pattern, but zonally shifted compared one, found exhibits a tripolar with centers over Ross, Amundsen‐Bellingshausen, Weddell Seas. shift result pre‐onset conditions associated that excites unique atmospheric circulation modes winter. distinct zonally‐shifted observed in four six Niña events period 1979–2020. These results suggest it helpful separate into single better understand impacts on climate.

Improving Multiyear Sea Ice Concentration Estimates with Sea Ice Drift
Multiyear ice (MYI) concentration can be retrieved from passive or active microwave remote sensing observations. One of the algorithms that combines both observations is the Environmental Canada Ice Concentration Extractor (ECICE). However, factors such as ridging, snow wetness and metamorphism can cause significant changes in brightness temperature and backscatter, leading to misidentification...

متن کاملSnow on Antarctic Sea Ice
Snow on Antarctic sea ice plays a complex and highly variable role in air-sea-ice interaction processes and the Earth’s climate system. Using data collected mostly during the past 10 years, this paper reviews the following topics: snow thickness and snow type and their geographical and seasonal variations; snow grain size, density, and salinity; frequency of occurrence of slush; thermal conduct...
متن کاملAntarctic Sea ice--a habitat for extremophiles.
The pack ice of Earth's polar oceans appears to be frozen white desert, devoid of life. However, beneath the snow lies a unique habitat for a group of bacteria and microscopic plants and animals that are encased in an ice matrix at low temperatures and light levels, with the only liquid being pockets of concentrated brines. Survival in these conditions requires a complex suite of physiological ...
